Belle Glade’s annual Black Gold Jubilee is a beloved tradition with roots that trace back to the 1976 Bi-Centennial celebration, organized by the City of Belle Glade to honor our nation’s 200th birthday. That milestone event inspired a group of local citizens to create a festival of their own, aiming to replicate its success while celebrating Belle Glade’s unique agricultural heritage. Their focus shifted to the area’s famously fertile soil, affectionately known as “Black Gold,” which has long been the foundation of the region’s bountiful harvests.
In 1978, the first official Black Gold Jubilee was held at McDonald Park, next to the Belle Glade Branch Library. What began as a small, local event has since grown into one of South Florida’s most anticipated festivals, drawing several thousand attendees from near and far each year.
The Black Gold Jubilee isn’t just a one-day event; it’s a month-long celebration packed with community activities that lead up to the big day. Festivities include:
On the morning of the Jubilee, the fun begins with the 5K Walk/Run and 10K Run on Torry Island, followed by the lively Main Street Parade that brings the community together in celebration.
After the parade, the spotlight shifts to Torry Island, where attendees enjoy a full day of fun, food, and entertainment:
As the sun sets, the festivities move to the amphitheater stage for an evening of musical performances, culminating in the grand finale: a spectacular fireworks display over the lake that lights up the night sky.
The Black Gold Jubilee stands as a proud celebration of Belle Glade’s heritage, bringing together generations of residents and visitors to honor the region’s agricultural legacy and community spirit. It’s more than just a festival – it’s a tradition that highlights the best of what Belle Glade has to offer.
